The Story Behind Beirut City Hall: Beirut’s Municipality building constructed in 1925 was the masterpiece of Youssef Aftimos (Civil Engineer - Architect -Minister of Works in the 1926-1927).The grandiose building is in the Venetian and Arabesque architectural styles, a mix that expresses the regional identity of the area. Conforming to the Neo-Moorish revivalist school, Youssef Aftimos, who was its main protagonist in Lebanon, expressed his reaction against westernization of the country through architecture. The need to establish a more local or regional identity was reflected through his work. A text inscribed on the building’s entrance reflects this strong mindset: “Our remains identify who we are, so seek out our traces."
